How long have you been with USC? It will be 5 years this coming February. What do you enjoy most about working with USC? Well, I’m a Marine Mom, so I guess I’d have to say, “Completing the mission” because after the day is done, we are a team. It’s also rewarding to have the opportunity to grow with your position here. For instance, one more online training segment to complete a Government Contracts Certification course offered by Villanova University. And oh yeah, I usually keep several hats in my desk drawer, just in case. Some days the emails actually begin to eat their young. It’s a challenge. I love a challenge. If you had to name a USC employee that you admire, who would that be and why? Natalie Matthews. Over the past few years, I have watched her grow and mature into a woman who not only enjoys life, but is going to be extremely successful in her career. It is refreshing to work along side her. What is your most memorable moment at USC? On the second day of employment with USC, I figured out how to run my first report: an A/R Aging. I realized at that point, that my position would be a tremendous challenge and I was determined to get the Receivables portion of my job straightened out and keep it that way. Have you always wanted to work in accounting? I have always enjoyed working with numbers. My paternal Grandfather was a ‘Bean counter’ from way back and my Father started his career as an Auditor, so it must be in the blood. What was your first “paying” job? Started babysitting at age 12 and saved enough money to purchase my first car. Then on to various fast food positions while in high school. My first accounting position came 2 days after high school graduation, as an A/R clerk for a small electrical supply company. What are your hobbies? Cooking, working in my flower garden, reading and cat herding – I have three rescued cats. Not to mention I’m vice president of the Women’s group at my Church, and the coordinator for care packages to our Servicemen in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Korea. Also, spend a lot of time performing Volunteer work for “The Garden”, a local homeless shelter for Women and Children of Metro Atlanta. We literally pick up these folks from under interstate bridges and abandoned automobiles. Help them with hot meals, a clean and safe place to sleep and shower. And get their kids in school. We provide vocational training to the adults, so they can get on their feet and return to society with a variety of skill sets. What is your favorite cuisine? Home cooked meals prepared alongside my backyard vegetables. Love to add the homegrown spices right from the patio herb garden, too. Charcoal grilled, buttered and blackened yellowtail tuna steaks seasoned with oregano, along with vine ripe tomatoes, fresh green beans and squash… it’s kind of like “Cheeseburger in paradise”, if you know what I mean… If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Australia – enough said! Favorite quote? "A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done." – Dwight D. Eisenhower |
